Captain Harrison “Bud” Tordoff flew 85 combat missions in Europe in 1944-1945. He is credited with 9-½ kills, earning double Ace status. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and sixteen Oak Leaf clusters. In the 1990s, the P-51D Mustang plane he flew in 1945 was found in the Dominican Air Force. The plane was purchased and brought into the USA, where the Flying Heritage Foundation did the most complete restoration ever undertaken on a P-51D Mustang. Bud’s plane, Upupa Epops, is the only known remaining example of a P-51D flown in combat by an American Ace and is flown regularly at air shows and special events. There are several video clips of Upupa Epops on this site, including actual wing camera footage from some of Bud’s combat missions. Bud passed away July 23, 2008, having taken an active part in the restoration process.
